12-08-01 Omaha, Nebraska
Written
by David Geistlinger
On December 8, 2001, some of the Midwest’s
strongest powerlifters and bench pressers assembled in Omaha, Nebraska to test
their strength against lifters from around the area.
This year’s meet had three female
powerlifters competing against one another by formula. The formula takes into account body weight
and weight lifted. Rita Carlson took
first place totaling a 490 pound and she set four new Nebraska state master
records. Linda Burman totaling 380
pounds to take the runner-up position.
Bettina Scurlock had troubles with her bench press this day and could
not get one passed. Her lifts would
have been Nebraska Junior records. Look
for Bettina to return to the platform to get those records.
The men competed for placings in
their respective weight classes. James
Engel went unopposed in the 148 pound weight class compiling an 876 pound
total, which included a 325 squat, 170 bench, and 402 deadlift. All four were Nebraska state junior
records.
Three men battled for the title at
the 165 pound weight class. Richard
Davis of Sioux City, Iowa came out on top with a 1184 pound total including a
great 336 pound bench press. Thomas
Ouellete and 15 year old Steve Huffman took the second and third place spots
totaling 1080 pounds and 942 pounds respectively.
A very powerful group of lifters
represented the 181 pound weight class.
Shawn Frankl of Iowa and Robert Lynch of Oklahoma had an extremely close
battle. Robert was perfect in the squat with 562. Shawn passed on his opener and came back on his second to put up
551. Shan went for a huge 584 on his
third but could not get it. Shawn owned
the bench putting up 429 and just missing a 451 lift. Shawn took a 88lb lead into the subtotal. Shawn pulled 529 dead and Robert came out
with a big dead and finished the day perfect 9 of 9 including a 606 dead which
brought him within 11lbs of Shawn.
Shawn came out ahead 1510 to 1499 over Robert. Shawn’s efforts also gave him the lightweight best lifter award
with Robert right behind him by formula.
Steve Auxier of Lincoln, Nebraska also made a very impressive
appearance, totaling 1355 including a 352 bench. Steve’s shirt blew out on his third causing him to miss a 369
bench. Steve finished the day in third
place, with David Peplimski of Nebraska totaling 1052 pounds to take fourth
place.
The 198 pound class was dominated by
Jim Merchlewitz of Iowa. Jim squatted
big to take a huge lead and he never looked back. Jim took a 589 second attempt squat and lost his balance. He came back on his third a pushed a huge
600 squat. Jim finished the day with a
1521 total. Steve Stout of Kansas
totaled 1289 pounds to take second place.
Forty six year old Terry Grindstaff got totaled 1168 including a 308
bench to break the Nebraska Masters record and Jerome Adams of Bellevue
Nebraska placed fourth with a 1036 pound total
The biggest class of the day was the
220 class. There had been nine lifters
originally entered in the 220 but several lifters changed classes as the meet
drew near. Chad Crigger of Iowa
separated himself from the rest of the class early in the meet with a 573
squat. Chad missed a 628 and 633 squat. Chad ended the day with a 644 deadlift
giving him a 1598 total and first place.
Only 17 pounds separated the second and fourth place finishers. Stuart Junker of South Dakota was in second
at subtotal with 837 followed closely by Joel Diers of Lincoln and Tony
Springman both had 815 at subtotal. The
final deadlifts would determine the placing.
Joel opened with a 507 dead to move into second. Tony came back with a 518 second attempt to
move into second. Joel took a
conservative jump to 523 to move ahead of Tony. Stuart attempted a 501 third attempt, which would have given him
second place. When the dust settled
Joel was in second with Tony 5 lbs behind in Third and Stuart in fourth1with a
1322 total. David Ortiz of Missouri
totaled 1069 pounds to round up the finishers in fifth.
Two lifters completely dominated the
242 pound weight class, separating themselves from the rest of the finishers by
over 300 pounds, while breaking numerous state records. Mike Taylor of Omaha came up from the 220 class
intentionally to compete against Bryan Getchell, the Iowa State Chair. Mike and Bryan wanted to go head to
head. Mike only weighed 221lbs. Mike went 3 for 3 in the squat and got a PR
584. Bryan also went 3 for 3 and stayed
close with a 556 effort. In the bench
both lifters were on and went 3 for 3, Mike pushed up a new Nebraska Submaster
record 451 and Bryan pressed a new Iowa Open record bench of 457. Mike took a 22 pound lead into the
deadlift. Both opened the dead with
573. Mike took 589 for a second attempt
and Bryan made a big jump to 622. Mike
ran into trouble and missed 589 twice.
Bryan made 622, but missed his third attempt of 633. When the day ended, Brian Getchell came out
on top with a 1636 pound total, including Iowa state bench and deadlift
records. Mike Taylor took second place
totaling 1609 pounds, including Nebraska state submaster records in the bench,
deadlift, and total. There was also a
close battle for third and fourth place, with Ron Ruhs of Blair, Nebraska
totaling 1284 pounds over Jesse Borden of Iowa who totaled 1218 pounds. Howard
Huffman of Nebraska took the fifth place spot with a 1058 pound total.
The 275 pound class only had one
entry, but that lifter stole the show.
Steve Davenport of Nebraska went 9 for 9 which included the biggest
squat of the day with 650 pounds, and the biggest total of the day with 1802
pounds. His performance earned him the
Heavy weight Best Lifter award.
The Super heavy weight class had a
couple of the closest battles of the day.
Last year’s Super Heavy Champion, Ken Ufford had entered but got hurt
weeks before the meet. With Ufford’s
absence the class was open for the taking.
The class had four huge lifters.
They all started the day with big squats. Bobby Bowman and Tom Stout both
squatted 584. Kevin Andrew had a 622
lift and Brian Jacobson had to take three tries to get his opener in but it was
the biggest squat of the class at 628.
Bowman attempted the biggest bench at 501, but finished with 479. Kevin Andrew took the lead at subtotal
followed by Bowman and Stout. Bowman
opened the dead with 600 and finished with a 672 to secure the win with a 1736
total. Tom was behind Kevin by 94lbs at
subtotal. Tom opened conservatively but
took big jumps on his second and third to finally pull 611, which tied him with
Kevin. Tom won the tie by body
weight. Brian pulled a 600 opener, but
had troubles with his second attempt of 622 and passed on his third. Both Stout and Andrew set masters records in
the squat, bench, deadlift, and total for their respective states. Brian Jacobson of South Dakota was only 66
pounds back from them totaling 1532 to take fourth place.
This was the first year that a bench
press competition was added to the meet.
Once again, the female bench pressers competed by formula. Four women went head to head while each one
of them set a Nebraska state record in their respective age category and weight
class. Rachel Swanson took the title by lifting 93 pounds more than the next
biggest lift, with a lift of 181 pounds.
Barb Sieps and Linda Birman lifted the same weight at 77 pounds, but
Sieps had the slight edge according to the formula and took the second place
spot. Finishing out the women’s
division was Rita Carlson with a bench press of 88 pounds for fourth place.
The men’s lifting started out with a
single entry in the 123 pound weight class, with Scott Leapman of Iowa. Scott had been trying to make the 114 class,
but missed weight by a couple pounds.
He finished the day completing a 176 pound bench press.
The 165 pound weight class had
Richard Davis of Iowa taking the victory with a bench press of 336 pounds.
The 181 pound weight class also had
Mike Dowling going unopposed to walk away with the title making a South Dakota
state submasters record bench of 385 pounds.
A fairly close battle went on in the
198 pound weight class. Myself, Dave
Geistlinger, benched 369 pounds for the first place spot, with Josh Hudelson of
Iowa only 33 pounds back with a bench of 336 pounds to take second place. Todd Kowal of Omaha, Nebraska benched a
great 319 pounds for a new state teenage record (18-19 years old).
The 220 pound competition ended with
18 year old Jake Johnson of Nebraska making arguably the most impressive bench
of the meet with 446 pounds. This earned
him the new state record in the 220 pound teenage weight class (18-19 years
old). This is only about 10 pounds of f
the Teenage American record. Jake
already has numerous American and National records in all three lifts to his
credit. Stuart Junker of South Dakota
made a 358 pound bench for second place, while 53 year old Clyde Garmong of
LaVista, Nebraska benched 308 pounds for third place and a new Nebraska masters
state record.
The 242 pound weight class had
Charles White of Lincoln. Charles
dropped weight from the 275 class and was looking to smash several
records. The weigh lose took its toll
on Charles as he only managed his opener of 457 pounds. But 457 was good enough for a new Nebraska
state submaster and Police & Fire record.
The biggest bench of the day came
from Tom Lamb of Blair, Nebraska. Tom opened with an easy 457 then jumped right
to 507 for a new Nebraska State Police & Fire record. On Tom’s third attempt, he missed a 512
bench about an inch from lockout. Tom
was awarded the overall best bencher award.
The Midwest Senior State contest is
quickly becoming the “who’s who” of powerlifting in the Midwest area. Each
year, the meet grows with more and more of the best lifters in the area
stepping up to showcase their abilities.
The meets design of eliminating all divisions and allowing lifters to
compete head to head in their weight class against all other lifters has become
very popular with the lifters. The
meet also offers a lot of bonuses for the lifters and spectators. The meet director uses two large projection
screen scoring systems. One shows
weight on the bar in pounds and kilos, time clock, and loading chart. The second screen shows up to the second
scoring of the lifters order, lift attempts missed and made and total with
wilks formula continuously updated.
Both a computer generated and make the meet more lifter and spectator
friendly. The lifter feedback has been
very positive.
The meet director, Tim Anderson,
would like to thank everyone who helped make this meet a reality. For meet photos and other meet info be sure
to check www.nebraskapowerlifting.com. Next year’s meet is currently being planning
so start training and plan to attend.
